What is a conversion factor?

A conversion factor is a ratio between equivalent units and is dimensionally equal to one, such as 2.54 centimeters per inch. Multiplying by the correctly oriented ratio changes the unit representation without changing the quantity.

Why can only compatible dimensions be converted?

Conversion preserves a quantity within one dimension, such as length to length or mass to mass. Meters cannot be converted directly to kilograms because length and mass represent different dimensions. A physical equation may relate them only when additional measured properties are supplied.

Why is temperature conversion not just multiplication?

Celsius and Fahrenheit use different scale sizes and different zero points, so converting a temperature value requires both a multiplier and an offset. Temperature intervals use only the scale ratio, which is why values and differences must not be confused.

Does an exact factor guarantee an exact displayed result?
